专利文献是一种法律文件。它同其他科技文献相比，在语言上有其独特之处，如准确严谨并列成分多，层次复杂，大量使用法律文体用语等。因此，合同与标书的翻译原则，即准确、典雅、严谨、缜密，也适用于专利说明书的翻译。
英语专利说明书有其一定格式，语言上有一定的“雷同性”。一般包括著录项目、摘要、附图及说明、专利说明、权利要求等部分。现择要叙述如下。
1专利摘要
阅读专利说明书摘要有助于情报检索，迅速了解发明的主要内容。摘要的字数通常**在200个词左右。为了能简明扼要地表达发明的要点和主要用途，往往使用长句，以及各种从句(从句套从句)、倒装句，另有分词独立结构作状语和现在分词或过去分词短语作定语等。因此，要译好专利文摘，弄清原文的语法关系至关重要。我们以美国专利4，245，966号的摘要的第一句为例。
In a device such as a refrigerant compressor provided with a reciprocating piston having a stroke length which can be changed from one value to another in accordance with the direction of rotation of the crankshaft driving a connecting rod, there is provided an arrangement in which the top deadcenter position of the piston can be maintained irrespective of the changes in stroke length by an eccentric ring which has limited rotation on the crankshaft crankpin, and a second eccentric ring encompassing the first eccentric ring and which has limited rotation relative to the encompassing strap end of the connecting rod.
这一句很长，为一复合句。该复合句第一个逗号前为一状语部分，其中有：①过去分词短语provided with a reciprocating piston，作定语，修饰refrigerant compressor；②现在分词短语haying a stroke length作定语，修饰reciprocating piston；③定语从句which can be changed…another，修饰a stroke length；④介词短语in accordance with…the crankshaft，作状语，修饰can bechanged；⑤现在分词短语driving a connecting rod作定语，修饰the crankshaft。
第一个逗号后为主句部分，there is provided an arrangement是倒装结构，主语为an arrangement。紧跟定语从句in which thetop…can be maintained，在谓语can be maintained后跟上介词by短语作状语，by后有两个并列宾语：an eccentric ring，它又套上一个定语从句which have limited rotation…crankpin；另一并列成分为：a second eccentric ring，后跟作定语的现在分词短语encompassing the first eccentric ring，又跟定语从句and which haslimited rotation，说明a second eccentric ring；另有形容词短语relative to作定语，修饰limited rotation。

专利说明书中的附图有助于读者理解发明内容，特别是难以用文字来确切清楚地表达发明内容时，常用附图加以补充，以一些简要的词语说明。例如：

专利说明书主要是指对发明的描述，其内容包括：
1．发明的背景(Background of the Invention)。常包括：
①发明的领域(Field of the Invention)，
②现有技术的描述(Description of the Prior Art)，指发明人所了解的有关发明内容的背景技术，并指出现有技术中还存在的缺点和问题，以引出本发明的目的和优 点。
2．对附图的简要说明(Brief Description of the Drawings)。
1) Figure 1 represents a block diagramof the present invention．图1表示本发明的方框图。
2)Figure 2 is a top view of the ionic solution bath shown in Figure 1．图2是图1中所示的离子溶液槽的顶视图。
3．实施例的说明(Description of the Preferred Embodiment)。
实施例就是将本发明付诸实现的最佳实例。为了将发明更好地向公众公开，在这部分往往用实施本发明的具体例子加以说明，内容较详细。例如有些涉及工艺过程方面的发明往往要将实施本发明的条件，如温度、湿度、压力等各种参数加以说明。实施例有时结合附图加以说明，因此要将附图上所有的标记都译出并加以说明。
在实施例说明中，常常使用下列词语：
1)Referring now to the drawings 现在讨论附图
2)more specially to Figure 1 特别是图1
3)the instant invention 本发明
4)as configured in fig 1 如图1所构成的
5)unit under test 待测部件
6)undesired matches 不匹配

在许多英语国家，如在美国、英国、加拿大等国的专利说明书中，对发明描述部分的书写格式和用词基本相似，因此熟悉了上述说明书，就可以触类旁通。
4权利要求书
权利要求书通常由若干权项(claims)组成。权项可分为独立权项和从属权项(Independent claims and dependent claims)等。权利要求书中常用下列词语和短语：

1．常用单元句。单元句就是主句中只有主语或只有谓语的句子。例如：

上述单元句中，只有主语Apparatus，没有谓语，其中characterized by是过去分词短语作Apparatus的后置定语。

2．常用分词独立结构。例如：
2)a bath composed of an ionic conducting solution, said board or substrate being submergeable within said solution；
其中，being submergeable为分词独立结构作状语，其逻辑主语为said board or substrate。

3．常有过去分词短语或介词短语等作后置定语。例如：

其中，介词短语for recording (14) data作means的定语；过去分词短语generated by said central controhing device (12) 作date的定语。

4．mean后常跟定语。例如：
